Heitor Villa-Lobos was a prolific Brazilian composer, conductor, ‘cellist, and classical guitarist, and was probably the most significantly inventive individual in 20th-century Brazilian art music. He wrote over 2,000 orchestral, chamber, and vocal works. Central to Villa-Lobos’s compositional language is Brazilian folk music – he spent his formative musical years playing popular songs on the streets of Rio de Janeiro – but also using elements of European classical works and influenced by French music, creating his unique sound world. Sexteto Mistico is a unique composition in one movement, consisting of short sections, each bringing unexpected richness, strangeness, virtuosity and polyrhythms. The opening is diaphanous and other-worldly; instruments enter in turn as if introducing themselves, continually weaving their dreamlike harmonies. In the next segment we’re taken into a dark, atmospheric oboe solo; this, to rippling accompanying arpeggios, twists and turns with lyrical eeriness. In the final section the theme, that the repeated motif had been hinting at, clearly emerges, leading us to a bright conclusion. Reimagined for symphonic band from the original sextet of flute, oboe, alto saxophone, guitar, celesta and harp.

Allensbank (with an E – Canadians will understand, especially when they hear the section reminiscent of The Maple Leaf Forever) is a March originally written for Brass Band by Hugh Vaughan Wallis. It is in typical British March style. This arrangement by the composer is for standard Concert Band. Allensbank is a suburb of Cardiff, Wales where the composer’s ancestors farmed in the late 1800s, so the name seemed especially appropriate. Additionally, the name “Allen†has significance as being the name of the lake on which he owns a cottage, where some of the work on this march was done. Having received positive reviews of the work from such contemporary Brass Banding greats as Bob and David Childs of Cory and Black Dyke fame he has arranged it for both Wind Band and Brass Sextet.

Of special interest are the trumpet and piano solos, and a section for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and piano, in homage to Mozart and Beethoven, who wrote beautiful quintets for this combination of instruments. Not all parts are necessary. They were included so as not to leave out members of a band I was playing in. For example, the alto clarinet part duplicates the third B flat clarinet part. There are tenor sax cues in the alto sax part for the solo in measures 46 and 47 in case a tenor sax is not available. A PIANO IS REQUIRED. I don't have a good band sound clip but you can listen to the piece arranged for wind quintet and piano. It is the 1st movement of my Sextet for Winds and Piano.
