The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series has the flexibility to allow pupils of different standards to play together in one ensemble (up to five parts). It also encourages students to develop improvisation skills by providing soloing opportunities within all parts, with suggested pitches for improvising. Each piece has five different parts which are split into four ability levels as follows: A – Range of about 5 notes, easy rhythms. B – Range of about 1 octave, basic rhythms. C – Range of about a 12th, some more difficult rhythms. D – Range of about 2 octaves, some rhythmic complexity. This enables the teacher to select parts which are suitable for the standard of individual players in the group. As a general rule, the pieces have been composed as follows: Part 1 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 2) Part 2 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 1) Part 3 – accompaniment (synchronises with Part 4) Part 4 –accompaniment (synchronises with Part 3) Part 5 – bass line (independent) Each part also comes in a wide array of transpositions, clefs and pitches. Hence, almost any combination of instruments can play together in an ensemble of mixed abilities,including: Flutes, clarinets, saxophones, mixed woodwind, trumpets, mixed brass (including brass band), violins, strings, keyboards/pianos, tuned percussion. An ensemble using any combination of instruments (as is often found within schools) will work effectively as well. Example: A quintet might be selected as follows: 1A (violin), 2C(trumpet), 3B (clarinet), 4B (tenor sax), 5D (trombone) The melody in 1A would be very simple but would contrast nicely when passed to the more difficult 2C. Parts 3B and 4B will have quite a simple accompaniment between them, whilst the bass line on 5D will be more complex and rhythmically interesting. Parts can obviously be doubled up as well beyond five players. Please note that the teacher of the ensemble should be careful to pick parts which are well-suited to the players’ abilities. CRAZY LATIN! is the second piece in this series, and has additional parts for Latin percussion commonly found in the classroom. Suggested percussion rhythms are also provided with phrases by which students can remember the rhythms. You are obviously free to alter these in any way, or add additional instruments however. Please listen to the mp3 file, which is an electronic example of the piece being played with glockenspiel on 1C, piano on 2B, xylophone on 3B, clarinet on 4A and 'cello on 5D. Score and all parts are included here in a variety of pitches, clefs and transpositions. It is the complete package! As a general rule, the pieces have been composed as follows: Part 1 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 2) Part 2 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 1) Part 3 – accompaniment (synchronises with Part 4) Part 4 –accompaniment (synchronises with Part 3) Part 5 – bass line (independent) Each part also comes in a wide array of transpositions, clefs and pitches. Hence, almost any combination of instruments can play together in an ensemble of mixed abilities,including: Flutes, clarinets, saxophones, mixed woodwind, trumpets, mixed brass (including brass band), violins, strings, keyboards/pianos, tuned percussion. An ensemble using any combination of instruments (as is often found within schools) will work effectively as well. Example: A quintet might be selected as follows: 1A (violin), 2C(trumpet), 3B (clarinet), 4B (tenor sax), 5D (trombone) The melody in 1A would be very simple but would contrast nicely when passed to the more difficult 2C. Parts 3B and 4B will have quite a simple accompaniment between them, whilst the bass line on 5D will be more complex and rhythmically interesting. Parts can obviously be doubled up as well beyond five players. Please note that the teacher of the ensemble should be careful to pick parts which are well-suited to the players’ abilities. IT'S TIME FOR REGGAE is the third piece in this series, and has typical characteristics of the style, including the off-beat rhythm in parts 3 and 4, and the bass line which becomes more fluid in the more difficult part 5s. You could also have a drummer play an authentic 'one-drop' rhythm with the kick and side-stick both on 2 and 4. In the book of Matthew, chapter 27:1-10, Judas returns the blood money and hangs himself; the chief priests used the money and bought the Potter's field which became known as the Field of Blood, a burial place for strangers. This elegy for Judas is the haunting memoir of a traitor.Elegy is a piece just shy of seven minutes whose challenge is not in technical facility but rather in musical nuance. It gives many instruments opportunities to shine individually and in chamber-like settings, and it also challenges players to listen to the musical interactions in the fuller sections. Several specialty instruments are marked ad. lib., such as Eb clarinet, English horn, contrabassoon, double bass, and while they are optional, they sometimes do have prominent parts (especially English horn), but all optional instruments are either doubled or marked for cues when featured [NOTE: For ease of score reading, cues are not written out in the score; they are only cited on the appropriate lines]. So their presence is useful, but their absence is not prohibitive. Also, the score calls for some challenging ranges in the first horn, first bassoon and first/second trombones. These passages are marked with optional 8vb's, and the first bassoon and trombone have the opportunity to play a short passage in tenor clef. The timpani part includes suggested drum tunings, and it gives ample time and direction for the few pitch changes are required. The vibraphone part (Perc. 1) does employ four-mallet technique in places, but if this is not feasible (this would be a good piece in which to start learning it), the score specifies that Perc. 1 may be played on a piano instead. Percussion 3 calls for crotales, but in their absence, the glockenspiel may be used, and Perc. 3 already has that. The optional double bass part makes use of notes requiring a C extension, but it also gives optional small notes an octave higher in case the bassist has no C extension (which is likely). So in all, this piece offers plenty of challenges, but it also comes with optional escapes to help make it more accessible to more bands.Elegy-Field of Blood will challenge the musicality of good high school and college bands while still being a respectable member of professional repertoire. Here at last is my ’’Elegy sentimentale’’ for Concert Band, and an original composition.I hope it makes an excellent piece for amateur and professional bands alike; with some challenging and interesting woodwind and brass writing for all.I envisage the ’’Elegy’’ eventually making a good piece of film music, and in consequence any directors or producers looking for a movie theme; please feel free to contact me!Elegy Sentimenatle is a mournful & melancholic work, suited for performances on the concert platform.A Supreme Work of Art!The Elegy Sentimentale opens impressively. Keith Terrett plants a C deep in virgin soil; orchestrated brilliantly for bassoon, harp and delineated by pizzicato double basses this bass line is a tree of a forest; and we are at once held by the strength of the roots. The tonality is immediately clear, and there is a grand feeling of space and power in the wide layout of the score. A lone solo clarinet high in the tessitura accompanied by a solo cello with a counter subject state the opening eight bar theme which embodies the seeds of two ideas, which supplies the generating force for the slightly agitated Piu Mosso which follows. The counter subject given by the solo cello at the beginning is now reiterated by the plaintive voice of a solo oboe and a third motif makes an appearance in the solo clarinet; oboe and clarinet duet beautifully over arpeggiated rhythmic impulses in the harp. A new subject of an accompanying nature, derived from all the material thus far presented now comes off at a tangent on the strings cascading downwards and accompanying woodwind who, play the chief melodic subject while horns cry in anguish. This first section is then repeated; I found the whole experience spiritual, detached and wondering, intensified by the breath-taking stillness. Mr Terrett in the middle section that follows now uses his full orchestral forces; after a key change the emotional charge that follows is cataclysmic in its cry of anguish; the main theme is stated in a full dress orchestral tutti, which is then repeated. The music ebbs and flows with slight variations in the woodwind recalling the main ideas; at the very end high strings bring consolation and finally peace. Keith Terrett shows an admirable command of orchestration and melodic construction and combines these qualities with rare imagination and insight.Gerald Manning

Programme Notes:From a young age, I was always interested in castles and history, and have visited many castles in my home country of Wales, which is sometimes called the “castle capital of the world”. At one time Wales had about 600 castles, of which over 100 are still standing, either as ruins or restored buildings. The remainder have been reduced to ditches, mounds and earthworks. Visiting these amazing historically significant buildings has allowed me to reflect on their importance and purpose. In their day they were the centres of thriving communities and it is through their value as the focus of the community, that the three movements have developed their individual characteristics. The first movement depicts a large formidable castle, towering over the neighbouring lands, exuding power, authority and law, complete with noblemen and knights; the second movement describes the pastoral scenes around the castle, and the commoners going about their ordinary lives; the third demonstrates the military function of the castle which was to protect: when coming under siege, the people eventually triumph, the enemy defeated.

It opens with a setting of his hymn “Christus, de runs selig machtâ€. We then hear the subsequent variations as he may have used his melody. The first is in the classical style similar to Mozart, which is followed by a Romantic era Viennese waltz style, a la Strauss. He next appears in the late 19th century as a march composer. In his most recent appearance (that we know of), he writes in the swing style of the 1940’s. This piece, which is sure to be an audience favorite, provides the director with limitless opportunities to teach about the Phrygian mode and to discuss many eras of music history and the styles and composers associated with each, while giving the students the challenge of playing and learning to quickly transition to the various styles with music that is both challenging and fun.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBS1615-S). 9 x 12 in inches.Reflections on a German Folk Song is based on the traditional round Himmel und Erde, which directly translated meansHeaven and Earth, however the common English title is Music Alone Shall Live. While teaching music for SaydelCommunity School District in Des Moines, Iowa, I taught the round to elementary students and concluded that the folk tunewould lend itself well to young instrumentalists. Consequently, I set out to arrange the round for emerging band.After an introduction based on motives and rhythms of the round, the tune is initially played by an alto saxophone solo (oroboe). After a transition from the key of F Major to E-Flat Major, the band divides into three groups to play the three-voiceround. The entire round is repeated twice, exhibiting a lengthy crescendo and eventual diminuendo caused by the threeinstrument groupings ending their voices in the round.Having students perform a simple, yet lyrical round provides for a variety of educational opportunities. Similar to youngvocal ensembles, performing a round helps students to securely play with a group that is doing something different thanother sections of the ensemble, which ultimately assists in the transition to playing within a smaller, individual section orindependent part. Reflections on a German Folksong contains simplistic rhythms, which allows students to primarily focuson phrasing, articulation, tone quality and dynamics.

Score and parts. 96 pages. David Berlin #3559075. Published by David Berlin (A0.958083). This collection of folk melodies from Ireland can be studied independently or in a variety of groupings. While created in open scoring for beginning and young instrumentalists, these pieces could be used by anyone. They are accessible with as few as two players and as many as are available in almost any combination of instruments. The folk melodies are also excellent to use as warm-ups because they can serve the purpose while also providing aesthetic value. The teacher is encouraged to be flexible and creative with them. Directors are encouraged to perform these in various combinations and sets. Feel free to be creative. For example, repeats could be added featuring various soloists and/or small groupings in contrast with the full group (as in a concerto.) Creativity could be promoted by allowing students to make suggestions pertaining to the formal organization of the material. In addition to decisions as to which pieces to perform directors are encouraged to involve students in making creative decisions such as which ones to put together, which phrases to repeat in various combinations and instrumental subsets and other appropriate aesthetic decisions. Each piece could function as a locus for branching into various content areas in connection with social studies, integrated curriculum and/or inquiry. Many of the melodies have very smooth and conjunct voice leading making them excellent for solfege/sight-reading training. These melodies are offered as a resource for the teacher to use in a variety of ways and possibilities are unlimited. Lyrics are readily available online.

I was exposed to some beautiful melodies from the weekly Masses, including one I particularly remembered, but which was under copyright. So I decided to create a similar modal line and open the composition as if it were being sung in a church. I play the French horn which is why I chose that voice to express the theme. The variations which followed were to begin as historically simple, but move toward a more contemporary sound. I have always loved the percussive sound of Vaclav Nelhybell's music and that is what I intended for the ending.

Medioevo is a Composition based on impressions from the dark ages. The composer wrote the piece to take you on a journey through this remarkable period of time.Part 1: The Promised Beginning Land Of Departurethe part opens with a decisive rhythm in the lower brass, woodwind and percussion section. The theme played by the woodwinds is written to give the listeners a middle eastern feeling. This represents the crusades. The higher brass section play a nice and static counter theme.Part 2: Enchanted DominionThis section a bit mysterious and magic, played by mallets and flutes. The theme from the Oboe represents the ghost of a warlock trapped on the dominion. As we pas trough the dominion we need the protection of the church represented by the Harpsichord (clavecimbel) and clarinets.Part 3: The rustling ForestsAfter leaving the Enchanted Dominion we gallop with our horse trough the Rustling Forests. These forest show fast winds and have a lyric theme played by the trumpets and saxesPart 4: The SquareOnce trough the Forests we get to the Village square where the market is on going. We have several sales men selling their goods. These are represented in the themes of the woodwinds. The confusion gets to much and we try to hide from the sales men. The trumpets represent this part in a piano 5/4 movement which bring a big contrast trough the noises from the market place. In the end we need to get through the market place so we find a way to keep the sales men away by playing a wonderful legato melody which the dwarf’s taught us.Part 5: Dwarf’sThese social and kind people have a little village outside of the town where joyful melodies sound from both children as adults and elderly dwarf’s. the themes are divided under the different solo players of the woodwind sections.Part 6: Run or HideAfter a nice time with the Dwarf’s we continue our path but soon we face a large army coming our way. What do we do Run or Hide? This part is full of different melodies and counter melodies to represent the indecisiveness of the Dark Ages.Part 7: NeverlandWe arrive in the land of the elves where the tenor sax and horns play an agitato atmosphere to represent our hart beat when we see these beautiful creatures. The themes from the flutes and euphoniums show the grace and beauty of the elves. While the harp creates an elf like atmosphere.Part 8 The castle Gardenswe arrive in the castle gardens. These gardens are the most beautiful in the whole land. It makes the orchestra say Ahh. While the percussion section gives it a magical feeling. After being amassed we soon find out that these gardens are made for the Authorities and paid by our tax money which gives us a double feeling. Should this money not be better spend on good music?Part 9 Black Powderafter we find out the castle lord wrongly used or tax money we go and find some black powder to blow him up. After being hunted down by the castle lord trying to get some black powder. We find ourselves in the glorious fight.Part 10: Rageour glorious fight with the castle lord continues into an enormous climax where we are stroke down and ends up with a one way ticket to the graveyard.Part 11: The GraveyardThe whole orchestra sings a spiritual song to guide us into the afterlives. An angle comes to collect our soul (represented by the piccolo flute). And slowly or name is forgotten.
