Phrygian Phrolic 54. Lydian Lilt 75. Mixolydian Mirth 96. Aeolian Aire 117. Locrian Lament 13These tunes may be played on lever harps with an Eb, Bb, F, or C tuning or on any pedal harp. All tunes were typeset to fit exactly on two facing pages to eliminate any page turns within a piece. If desired, the length of each piece can be lengthened by repeating some sections; section divisions are indicated by light double bar lines. Many people are unaccustomed to hearing tunes based on modes other than the Ionian or Aeolian. Therefore, you may find some of the melodic contours or harmonies to be unusual, unexpected, or even uncomfortable. There are only three lever changes in this entire book – and they all occur on the last note of the piece. Guitar chords are included so that the melody may be played by any C instrument, accompanied by chords on harp, lute, guitar, or keyboard. Also, the transcribed harp part can be played on any keyboard instrument with only minoradjustments.Dynamics, fingering, and metronome markings are provided throughout as an aid to performance. However, the harper should use whatever dynamics, fingerings, and tempos suit them, no matter what this book indicates! The maximum range needed for each piece is only 26 strings (3.5 octaves) from low C to high G. Therefore, it can be played on a small harp encompassing that range. Simply treat the C two octaves below middle C as the lowest C on your harp and adjust the octaves accordingly. Ignore any 8va indications and shorten glissandos as needed.

This piece has what is, in effect, a one-measure subject, and a one-measure countersubject. They play against each other for most of the piece, emphasizing various pitches, until they come together, as each one is played in both voices, and the piece concludes with some nice contrary motion on the main subject. Articulation and the four quarter-notes of the countersubject give the piece a stately but not too somber mood. Bach liked Eb minor better, but I picked sharps for my own edification, as I am quite used to flats. MBB.

The idea behind these series of compositions was to create easy, short and accessible piano pieces that sounded nice and that would encourage my students to learn various pieces, rather than learning a single long piece.My aim as a composer with this series is to evoke feelings usually associated with the night, such as calmness, tranquility, serenity, among others. The harmony utilized in these pieces is rooted in tonality. However, the fairly constant use of chords with added 6ths, 7ths, 9ths, as well as a few modal exchanges, add color to the harmonic sense of the music, perhaps even contributing to create a relaxing mood.Also, these pieces have a pedagogical edge. They are meant to be utilized to showcase chord triads, broken chords, music sequences, the use of the pedal, among many others. If you are a teacher, feel free to use these pieces as examples for your lessons.The last but most important thing I would like to add is to just enjoy playing these pieces. Do not hesitate in diving into a calm mood while playing these series of compositions, since they were created with that objective in mind. Simply enjoy them.As a side note, you can find the Little Nocturnes performed and recorded by yours truly in all major digital streaming platforms.

Abraham’s Walk is a reflection, for viola and piano, of the dramatic biblical story of God calling on Abraham to demonstrate his faith by sacrificing his son, Isaac. The beginning sets a peaceful mood with a quiet modal tune, first in piano and then viola, but somber chords intervene. Then God calls to Abraham three times, each time louder, the last time thunderously. After a pause, the viola captures Abraham’s stunned and then agitated response, as he processes what he’s being asked to do. Tragically resolved, he begins the trudging walk to his son’s doom, which builds to a climax in both instruments, culminating in God’s calling again to Abraham, this time to stay his knife hand.

This sonata conveys different moods using various styles in each of the movements, all of which take some liberty and, at times, are vague with form.The first movement, inspired by Claude Debussy, uses a quasi mirror form, with the two motives connecting with a sudden yet seamless tempo change, which is supported by the driving rhythm in the piano, and a development in the middle of the movement.The second movement is a funeral march and is based on the chord progression built around the sustained B natural in the flute, which conveys a dreamlike atmosphere. As the progression transforms, there is an increasing sense of dread that unfolds until this feeling becomes primal before collapsing in on itself at the climax of the movement. From there, the progression returns more actively with, although not as strong as before, a sense of dread still present for the remainder of the movement. The movement is in ternary form (ABA), with a development in the first A section.The third movement is a more clearly defined rondo form and is based on themes that undergo subtle changes each time they return. Other themes include a recurring call and response between the treble and bass lines in the piano, which the flute participates in this exchange when it is presented again later, a reference to the second movement's progression, and a modal theme that floats in terms of harmonic and melodic structure. When the initial theme returns for the final time, a coda restates previous ideas as the finale gradually increases its tempo and concludes the piece. This movement is the most technically challenging, especially considering that I asked Natalie how fast she can double tongue. In general, there are a fair amount of high passages and big leaps.
