Jack Brymer premièred this work originally called 'Sopsonare' in 1973 at the American School at St. John's Wood playing on Michael Krein's Selmer soprano saxophone. This Sonata the first composition for saxophone by Colin Cowles was inspired by the acquisition of a soprano saxophone whilst teaching in Hemel Hempstead in the early 1970s. Although having played on a simple system soprano as a boy (an instrument borrowed from and taught him by his father) this re-introduction to the instrument was to kindle a life-long love of the complete saxophone family and the composition of an almost endless 'library' of works for it at all levels. It was also at a time whenthe composers had made recent acquaintance with the eminent saxophonist Peter Ripper and had been introduced to the saxophone quartet by the recently formed London Saxophone Quartet whose leader Paul Harvey was to play this Sonata and the Elegy for Soprano Saxophone and String Orchestra. He in fact premiered the latter work which Jack Brymer then played in public on a number of occasions. It was recorded by Peter Ripper with the composer at the piano at the BBC Maida Vale Studios. It is a totally non-esoteric work but like so much of the composer's music it is fun and approachable bearing repetition without becoming tedious. The composer has always favoured the Bb saxophones (soprano and tenor) which is reflected by his output. Of particular note are: • Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra• In Memoriam for Tenor Saxophone and String Orchestra• Sonata for Tenor Saxophone and Piano • Three Bala Sketches for Tenor Saxophone and Piano. This Sonata for Soprano Saxophone and Piano and the Elegy for Soprano Saxophone and Strings are particular favourites of the composer.

Depuis des siècles, « la lecture à vue » également appelée « déchiffrage » est une épreuve pour les concours de musique. Les compositeurs sont sollicités pour cet exercice et composent un texte court selon un cahier des charges assez précis (minutage, difficulté, modes de jeu instrumental, etc). Depuis la création d'une classe de saxophone confiée à Adolphe Sax en 1857 au Gymnase musical militaire, qui n'est autre qu'une annexe du Conservatoire de Paris, et jusqu'à la nomination de Marcel Mule en 1942, les concours se multiplient partout en France, tant au conservatoire qu'aux orchestres divers et variés, principalement militaires.
Les trois textes anonymes de style purement français (volume 4 de cette série consacrée aux déchiffrages : « andantino » de date inconnue / « morceau à vue » en 1881 / « andantino » en 1890) nous parviennent des Archives Nationales en lien avec le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Si ces dates ne correspondent pas à une possible affectation à la classe de saxophone car Adolphe Sax n'était alors plus en service, on pourrait imaginer qu'elles aient été composées pour un concours extérieur.
L'origine de la « lecture à vue » signée par Gabriel Dupont (1878-1914) non datée (volume 2), est également une énigme. Un doute plane sur le fait que ce texte soit bien du compositeur français, même si on en reconnaît la tendresse de cette page délicieuse. En 1922, Guillaume Balay (1871-1943) alors chef de musique de la Garde Républicaine de Paris compose deux « lecture à vue » pour saxophone (alto et ténor) vraisemblablement pour un concours militaire (volume 5) ; rappelons qu'entre 1870 et 1942, le conservatoire de Paris sera dépourvu de classe de saxophone.
La Ville de Reims accueillera deux jeunes compositeurs qui deviendront des personnalités musicales à l'esthétique prononcée ; tout d'abord Georges Migot (1891-1976) qui propose une « lecture à vue » (volume 3) en 1929 pour le concours de l'institut de musique, puis André Jolivet (1905-1974) qui compose son « déchiffrage » en 1938 (volume 1).
Toutes ces courtes pièces ont été étudiées méticuleusement avant de décider de leur redonner vie. Cette publication leur permet à présent de faire partie du patrimoine musical du saxophone classique.

French saxophonist Marcel Mule (1901-2001) compiles an essential addition to the Saxophone repertoire. Including pieces by Martini Handel Corelli Rameau Lully Couperin Leclair and Bach Mule ensures that the Baroque genre is accessible to the Saxophone. In the first volume of his compilation Famous Pieces for Alto Saxophone and Piano Mule arranges famous works by the great composers of the Baroque era for the Saxophone ensuring that necessary additions and edits are made. E flat major-The Concerto For Alto Saxophone And Orchestra is Alexander Glazunov’s last work; since its first performance in 1934 it has become part of the standard Saxophone repertoire. The sole surviving autograph manuscript is the hand-written dedication score given by Glazunov to Sigurd Raschèr (Raschèr was the founder and leader of the well-known and innovative Raschèr Saxophone Quartet).This score contains the original version of the work without the alterations which were made in the proofs to the orchestral score as well as the full version of the composer’s cadenza which was later shortened. The autograph manuscript also containssome performance markings by Raschèr.The correspondence between Raschèr and Glazunov documents the composer’s thoughts on the work and his recommendations about the size of the accompanying String Orchestra. In Satoshi Yagisawas SAXOPHONE CONCERTINO the solo instrument is integrated with the accompaniment rather than being separate. The romantic-sounding solo chorale in the first half of the work sounds wonderful on the alto saxophone. A lively allegrois heard in the second movement referencing music of the baroque era with the solo now played on the soprano saxophone but by the same soloist. This work is also available in an editon for saxophone and wind orchestra (DHP 1115180-010).
