Par KRAUS JOSEPH MARTIN. The first volume of the new scholarly edition contains the complete chamber music without a keyboard instrument. The most important group of works comprises the string quartets, 10 of which have survived. They were composed during the 1770s, whenHaydn was developing this class of music. The differing balance between such contrasting musical elements as entries in imitation, courtly melody, swift changes of tempo and unexpected modulations gives each of the quartets its special charm. Thefact that six of them were published in 1784 as Krauss 'Opus 1' by the publisher J. J. Hummel shows that the composer himself was convinced by his quartets. With the Flute quintet this volume alsocontains another key work in Kraus’s chamber music. Gibbons Suite is a suite of works by Orlando Gibbons arranged by Nico Muhly for Clarinet in B Flat String Quartet and Piano. It was premiered by the Britten Sinfonia in January 2010.

Sound and colour are of most importance to Heribert Breuer in this work. The interplay between wind trio and string trio throughout this cycle is of particular interest.

American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of?music with repetitive structures.?Façades is a work that describes superficial qualities. Philip Glass wrote this piece as part of the soundtrack for the film Koyaanisqatsi but it was not used and so became anindependent work. In fact it became a staple of live performances of the Philip Glass Ensemble during its era (1981). Originally its eerily flowing sonorities were to have accompanied visual scenes of New York?s Wall Streetapocalyptically deserted. The piece was given a new name Glasspiece #2 when it was choreographed for the New York City Ballet.This work is for Flute 1 & 2 OR Saxophone 1 & 2 with string ensemble Violin 1 & 2 Viola andCello. Although Zoom! by Shawn Okpebholo was commissioned by the US Air Force Band, its title refers less to the speed of supersonic fighter jets than to the brand of telecommunications software that allowed digital reunions between isolated loved ones during the 2020 pandemic, and to the race for a life-saving vaccine. The seven-minute piece for strings and percussion evokes the glimmers of hope and joy that manage to survive in times of darkness. Zoom! received a streaming premiere, performed in December 2021 by the strings and percussion of the US Air Force Band under the baton of Col. Don Schofield.
