‘Christmas Colours’ is a palette consisting of several Christmas songs. Bruce Fraser has mainly used the colours green (the colour of holly) and white (the colour of snow). This composition begins with the chiming of festive bells - if you listen well, however, you can already hear short fragments from 'The Holly and the Ivy', whose entire melody is finally played, alternated with 'The Sussex Carol'. After this, the pace slows down and the stately 'See amid the Winter Snow' sounds, but parts from 'Jingle Bells' and 'Silent Night' can also be heard. Then, after walking under 'The Holly and the Ivy' once again, the celebration of Christmas may begin!

This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters. Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a Swedish pianist, conductor and composer. His compositions include incidental music, operas, concerts, two symphonies and choral works. Initially influenced above all by Wagner and Bruckner, Stenhammar increasingly welcomed in his music a Nordic colour as well as melodic and rhythmic characters typical of Swedish folklore. Completed in 1921, the cantata SÃ¥ngen (The Song) was Stenhammar's last major work, and its combination of harmonic richness and contrapuntal dexterity ensured it awarm reception. The Interlude connecting the two halves of the work is the only part frequently performed today. It begins by creating a serious andintimate atmosphere, then the music gradually unfolds in increasingly powerful sonorities. Towards the middle a noble brass chorale emerges, but neither this nor the following finely crafted climax manage to change the prevailing mood of subtle melancholy typical of late Romantic Scandinavian composers. This arrangement by Franco Cesarini will allow your audience to get to know this great composer unknown to most.

Gazing into life is like gazing at the colours of passing time. Sometimes cool and mysterious, sometimes opalescent, warm or luminous, the colours of time, like life itself, are ever-changing. When colour materialises, it becomes music. With delicate and powerful moods, brilliant and intimate textures, and joyful and nostalgic sounds, music seeps into our memory like stories drawn from many individual real-life experiences.

The tradition of the Christmas tree in Western Europe dates back to a time long before any Christianization had taken place. During the severely cold winter nights, so it was believed, evil spirits tried to 'kill' nature. Needle-leaved trees were the only ones which kept their green colour throughout the year, and therefore became symbols of immortality. These 'living' trees, said to be the work of benign spirits, were brought into people's houses to ward off evil, life-threatening powers. In the 14th century people first started to decorate Christmas trees. It was a pagan custom, originated by the inhabitants of Alsace. This custom was taken over by the Church inthe course of the 15th and 16th century. At first the decoration consisted mainly of edibles, such as apples and wafers, but later small presents were added. Legend has it that the reformer Martin Luther was the first person to decorate a Christmas tree with candles. The flickering candle flames were meant to create the image of a starry sky in which Christ's apparition could be recognized. The German organ-player Ernst Anschütz from Leipzig was the first person to notate the song 'O Tannenbaum', the melody being a well-known folk song. Next to 'Stille Nacht' 'O Tannenbaum' is the most famous German Christmas song, now known throughout the world. In the United States of America the melody of 'O Tannenbaum' has even been used in four States (among which the State of Maryland) for their State song. In David Well's arrangement the song is first heard as many of us know it. After this introduction, however, it is transformed into a solid rock version, and the beat has been changed. In the second part the familiar three-four time is back, but here the rhythm is different from the original. After the richly ornamented rock beat the basic theme can be heard once again and the composition is concluded in a festive manner.

Much like a film score, Peter Kleine Schaars’ composition paints colourful images while telling the story of the Anglo-Saxon monk, Lebu nus. In around 768 AD, Lebu nus founded a mission in the Dutch province of Deventer in an effort to convert the Pagan Saxons. Contrasting themes describe the Ijssel Valley, the Saxons and Lebu nus, construction on the church and its subsequent destruction in a clash with the Saxons. The Ijssel-Valley-theme returns one more time in a minor key before each of the themes come together again for one rousing finale. Let battle commence!

This “Grand Overture†was commissioned by the “Nagano Community Band†- Japan- on occasion of its jubilee in 1992 and is dedicated to the band’s conductor, Ikuo Inagaki. The work is based upon three main themes, each symbolising a certain theme. The first part is characterized by its bright themes played mainly by the brass, accompanied by the woodwinds and festive percussion. This part symbolizes the jubilee which is the origin of the composition. This is followed by a bouncing allegro, in which each register of the band displays brilliant techniques. Especially the woodwinds come to the fore! This movement depicts the industriousness and enthousiasm shown by the members of the“Nagano Community Band†in the carrying out of their hobby. A third, main theme, is choral-like in character and is displayed both in the (soft) brass as well as in the warm medium register of the reeds. Here, nature’s beaty in and around the city of Nagano is musically celebrated. Following a “chamber-music episode†(featuring the flute, oboe, clarinet, alto-saxophone and horn) the initial allegro re-occurs, weaving its way towards a grandiose finale, in which the two previous themes are once again apparent. Due to its very colourful scoring and the enormous diversity of musical thoughts and ideas, this composition is a fascinating and memorable piece, worthy a jubilee overture! “The idea behind this song is to remind everyone, for all those who have forgotten, how colourful and exciting Christmas was during their childhood. Christmas is a magical time and, after all, no matter how old we are, we are all still children at heart.†These words were written by Chris de Burgh about his 2009 hit, The Bells of Christmas, inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Simon Fahnholz has now made an excellent version of this Christmas hit for concert band.
