First Position - Volume 4-These volumes contain a wide selection of easy recital pieces. They are designed as companion volumes to the Early Start on the Viola method but work equally well as a supplement to any other viola method. As all pieces are written entirely in first position they can be used just after a few months of lessons. Well-known as well as unfamiliar pieces provide welcome additional repertoire for young students and teachers.The piano part may be played by the teacher or an advanced student. arranged for Piano and Viola-Cesar Franck’s Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the Violin repertoire a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.After Franck’s death in 1890 the original publisher of the Sonata the Parisian house Julien Hamelle announced an arrangement of the work for Viola but it has not been possible to locate any copy of this publication. The present arrangement for Viola is largely based on Jules Delsart’s arrangement for Piano and Cello the onlyversion of the Sonata which the composer authorized. However the Viola part here also adopts extensive passages in their original register or remains in the middle octave especially in those passages where the Cello lies two octaves beneath the Violin.Being set in the alto register the part thus lies between the other two string versions lending the Sonata a delightful hybrid hue beyond the brilliance of the Violin and the sonorousness of the Cello. The Piano part has been left intact and is thus identical to that of the original version.The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the Sonata (Ger/Fr/Eng).

I first heard Walton's Viola Concerto in my youth and the mixture of haunting sadness and exuberance won me over immediately. Although other composers have written works for the instrument they are seldom played and the viola remains under regarded and unappreciated as do viola players! Having recently composed a number of cello pieces culminating in my 'Umbrian Variations' for eight cellos I decided to try my hand at something else the result:- this Sonatina for Viola and Piano. Last year (2009) at Ian Christians' Dordogne Chateau the Quator Wihan gave a concert and I was very struck by the viola playing of Jiri Zigmund - hence the dedication.

French composer and teacher Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a prolific composer of the 20th century as a member of 'Les Six'. His compositions remain highly regarded Sonata No. 2 for Viola and Piano being no exception. Milhaud's compositions are influenced by jazz and polytonality as exemplified in Sonata No. 2. Composed in 1944 Sonata No. 2 for Viola and Piano is an alternative exciting sonata made up of three movements; 1) Rural 2) Dramatic and 3) Rough. Milhaud makes use of variation in articulation complex rhythms chromaticism accidentals harmonics altering tempos variation in dynamics and a wide tessitura amongst other aspects. Milhaud's Sonata No. 2 for Viola and Piano is essential to all advanced violists seeking modern and exciting repertoire.

Reduction for viola and piano-William Walton composed his Viola Concerto in 1928-9 and it was given its premiere at a Promenade Concert at Queen's Hall London on 3rd October 1929. In the beginning Viola players adjusted the solo line to fit their own ideas of the work's character and Walton was generally happy to accomodate this. However he came to regard one player's version above all the others for its discipline and balance - that of Frederick Riddle. Riddle's edition was originally published with a Piano reduction of the first Orchestration in 1938 and it is this that forms that basis for the solo line in this edition. This present Piano reduction was made by Geoffrey Pratleyand published in 1993.

While Gordon Jacobs composed a vast amount of music more than four hundred pieces -- he was particularly celebrated for his work for Viola and for woodwinds as well as for his books on music pedagogy. Jacob had an early success with his Viola Concerto of 1926 which was premiered at a Promenade concert and which was the beginning of a series of strong contributions to Viola repertoire. This Sonatina for Viola and Piano demonstrates his sensitive writing for the instrument. It works very well when performed on clarinet as well.While many composers of the 20th century rejected serialism atonality and other avant garde effects in favour of Romanticism Jacob was much morean adherent to the musical models of the classic and baroque eras while still encompassing modern harmonies. His work Music for a Festival for symphonic wind band and brass ensemble was used for the post-war Festival of Britain and he arranged the British national anthem for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Elizabeth Maconchy composed her Sonata For Viola And Piano in 1937 which premiered the following year in London. Included in this is the Score and Parts for Viola and Piano with the piece lasting around14 minutes. Elizabeth Maconchy enrolled at the Royal College of Music at the age of sixteen and while her String Quartets are often seen by many as the pinnacle of her musical achievements thisSonata For Viola And Piano is a beautiful interplay between the two instruments and must surely rank as one of the finest Viola sonatas ever composed.

From the Golden Globe nominated movie The Reader comes three arrangemetns for Viola and Piano.The Piano takes the lead with the Viola instead providing drones shimmers and swells.

Carl Bohm's Sarabande has been effectively arranged here for Viola with Piano accompaniment by Alan Arnold. The warm energy of this dance sits well with the Viola which accentuates the passion and character of Bohm’s work.The solo Viola part is also included on a separate insert.

Arrangement for Viola and Piano-?Sooner or later the ?Romantic Pieces? will pave their way through all the salons?: thus the periodical Dalibor predicted when the ?Romantic Pieces? op. 75 were first issued by the publisher Simrock in 1887. Since then they have become some of Dvorák?s most popular works for violin and piano. Now they are being made available for violists also.Bella and Semjon Kalinowsky have arranged the four pieces on the basis of the ?Complete Edition of the Works of Anton n Dvorák?. The piano part of the original version remains while the violin part has been adapted for viola; it has been transcribed into the alto clef and includes fingering and bowing marks.With theirentrancing melodies and poetry these pieces pose few technical challenges and are thus easy to play.

For Viola and Piano. This piece is one of the finest compositions for viola by one of the instrument's greatest players. It is luxuriant in melodic inventions and startlingly beautiful in its instrumental colours. The piano is a full partner to the viola contributing an equal share of melodic interest and colouristic effects.

Easy to play, it requires some technique of the instrument and some theory knowledge to read in different keys. The book includes the parts for Viola and Piano and for Viola only. The music is cheerful and quite fast, with the Viola part playing mainly semisquavers alternating up and down every two bars. It is supposed to represent an American girl coming from Wisconsin. She is part of the four faces with: I. The Californian girl, II. The Wisconsonian and IV. The Parisian girl. Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher.
