Sir Edward Elgar was born in Worcester in 1857. Until the outstanding success of the 'Enigma' Variations in 1899 he was considered a 'provincial' composer - and a largely self taught one at that.In the earlier part of Elgar's career as a composer he wrote several short pieces which became very popular indeed. Chanson de Matin is one such the second of a pair (the other being Chanson de nuit) which carried his name far and wide before his larger orchestra works appeared. It was published in several versions at once: for string orchestra for small orchestra for violin and piano and so on - so it is almost impossible to say with any degree of certainty which was theoriginal version. This arrangement makes a useful addition to the repertoire for guitar.

In Smyrna and Skizze contain all the music which Elgar conceived and wrote entirely for the piano between the Concert Allegro of 1901 and three little works which appeared in the composer's old age. The pages of Skizze and In Smyrna give us a special insight into Elgar's understanding of the piano at the summit of his career.

Edward Elgar’s The Dream Of Gerontius is a splendid oratorio for Mezzo-soprano Tenor and Bass with Chorus and Orchestra. It is based on the epic poem The Dream of Gerontius by John Henry Newman written in 1865. The original vocal score of Gerontius was actually printed before Elgar's had even finalised or completed his final orchestration and as such it was printed without many of the markings that were added in the later full score. This new edition brings vocal and full scores into agreement for the first time having been authentically and effectively edited by Hywel Davies and Bruce Wood and also includes helpful notes on thebackground to the work as well as an outline of the editorial procedure and list of sources. This piece initially started out as a test piece for brass band. It was arranged for orchestra by Elgar in 1932.Ivor Atkins a close friend of Elgar arranged four of the movements from the orchestral version for organ to form the second organ Sonata. In 1897 Elgar became acquainted with A J Jaeger an employee of Novello publishing firm who offered encouragement during the less successful time of the composer’s life before the publication of the Enigma Variations. Over time Jaeger became Elgar’s closest friend. Jaeger wrote this analysis in 1900. While the language and certain references may be extravagant for today’s reader the insights Jaeger offers make this an invaluable accompaniment to Gerontius.

Op. 82-Edward Elgar spent the summer of 1918 in the countryside. In August he received reports of the approaching end of the First World War and this good news so inspired him that he was able to finish an initial draft of his great Violin Sonata in barely four weeks. Writing about it in his diary he notated laconically: ?Wrote some music?. His wife Alice was more enthusiastic: ?E. writing wonderful new music different from anything else of his?. This magnificent music is now available in a Henle Urtext edition by the British violinist and Elgar expert Rupert Marshall-Luck. He has examined and evaluated the many sources according to all the rules of Urtext editing the sketches drafts autograph fair copies proofs and first edition.
