It is only natural that Universal Edition turns to their excellent pedagogical composer James Rae to kick off their new Concert Band Collection, a new series of works perfect for school bands. I have composed with the aim of providing directors of elementary level bands with original material that will both inspire and challenge their musicians. The pieces are all tuneful and in very accessible musical styles designed to make the band sound at its very best. An optional supportive piano part has been included for those situations where there is not a full compliment of instruments. Merry-Go-Round is a mini concerto for band in which each section takes a turn as soloist. On a merry-go-round the viewpoint is constantly changing, this being portrayed by different instrumental groups playing variations on the main theme, continually coming to the fore. This attractive work will bring all the excitement of the fairground to your concert.

Merry-Go-Round is een miniconcert voor harmonieorkest, waarin de verschillende secties om de beurt aan bod komen. Immers, in een carrousel - een ‘merry-go-round’ - draait steeds weer een ander deel naar voren, in het blikveldvan de toeschouwers. Nadat alle secties een variatie op het hoofdthema hebben afgewisseld met een tweede melodie, vormt de terugkerende openingsfanfare het slot van het werk.

Auf einem Karussell - einem 'Merry-Go-Round' - dreht sich immer wieder ein anderer Teil nach vorne, hin zum Auge des Betrachters. Hier stellen sich immer wieder andere Instrumentengruppen in den Vordergrund, indem sie sich mit Varianten des Hauptthemas und einer zweiten Melodie abwechseln und so das Stück reizvoll und spannend für Musiker und Publikum gestalten.

Four Sketches for Band comprend quatre mouvements courts de caractère varié qui dépeignent l’atmosphère d’une fête foraine l’ancienne. Les mélodies sont agréablement divertissantes mais ont une structure rythmique simple. L’instrumentation de la composition est parfaite pour fanfares taille réduite. Chaque mouvement de cette composition peut être utilisé en tant que morceau de concert indépendant.
