A rare work for the Lute-based Theorbo. Below is the programme note from the composer.In July 1998 I decided that I would use a theorbo in Havoc a piece I was writing for the 1999 Proms (premiere September 8th 1999). Since my knowledge of the instrument was negligible I contacted David (The Orbo) Miller and appealed for help since I knew he would be playing in the Proms piece. He kindly and with admirable patience showed me how the instrument worked and I began writing groundwork as a technical exercise - hence one meaning of the title. The other is that it is a set of variations over a ground bass.Since the theorbo possesses eight diapason bass strings - whichare plucked like those of a harp not stopped with the left and - it seemed sensible to use these for the ground bass which consists simply of a rising eight-note scale using all diapason strings in turn. This ground is stated at the beginning and developed through 16 variations. Nos 1 to 7 are straightforward except that some of them compress the ground into itself. Nos 8 to 16 are in stretto: they are gradually overlapped with each other the new ground beginning one note earlier each time. The climax of the piece comes at variations 10 to 11; variations 12 to 14 bring it gradually down to earth; no. 15 is quiet and puts the decorated ground in relaxed canon with itself (in octaves using the top and bottom strings of the instrument). Variation 16 strips the ground of decoration putting tight scrunchy chords over it and the piece ends with the lowest diapason string (G) a quiet raspberry ripple of the other seven diapason strings and a final harmonic G to tell us that our little journey is over. André Jolivet (1905-1974) composed Chant de Linos for the Solo de Concours at the Paris Conservatoire in 1944. Initially written for Flute Harp and String Trio this version contains the scores for the Flute and the Piano. This piece is quite difficult to execute but will stand out in a competition or a recital. Inspired from what is called a Chant de Linos a threnody (or lament to the dead) in the Greek antiquity this piece is also about Linos son of Apollo. A good music player Linos taught Orpheus the Lyre and was killed by Heracles for criticising him too much. André Jolivet is a Frenchcomposer who was really inspired by the Antiquity and had a strong interest for atonality. He also wrote many chamber music pieces eleven concertos some orchestral and some vocal music.

The first of the Two Pieces For Flute And Harp Or Piano Accompaniment “1. The Swans” is a lovely short piece composed by Henri Busser. Really melodious this piece is perfect to work on the flexibility of the tone and a good training to be able execute pieces more difficult. Written mainly in A key not often used by flautists and starting Andantino moderato the piece symbolizes the swans riding on a lake. It features an intro a main theme in [A] which comes back A tempo in [C] and a final Piú moderato finishing with a really high trill. Some difficulties such as the A key and the range usedon this piece will require an intermediate technique: difficulty is rated at 5°. This first piece is followed by the second one: “The squirrels”. Henri Busser (1872-1913) is a French classical composer and Organist. He was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire and a member of the Académie française. He wrote a ballet numerous operas and chamber music.

Written for Flute and Piano it would fit players with advanced skills and abilities and a great endurance. It contains up to 5 flats and 4 sharps. Part of the series 'Flute Classics' this piece number 76 is among those adapted by P. Taffanel Ph. Gaubert M. Moyse and others. Very enjoyable yet very difficult this piece was written as a Concert Solo and could be easily be used in recitals or contests. Considered as a maestro by some musicians Marcel Moyse hascomposed many Flute methods and exercise books that have also been published by Alphonse Leduc. His methods are widely used and recognised worldwide.

For solo Flute.Composer's Programme Note'March Sonatina is the third in a series of short sonatina-like pieces for soloinstruments and it was commissioned by the 25th Presteigne Festival of Musicand the Arts with funds provided by the Colwinston Charitable Trust and it isdedicated to this most loveable of Festivals. The first performance was given byKathryn Thomas on Tuesday 28th August 2007 at St Mary’s Church Kinnerton.It contrasts a slow opening with a quicker central section and employs a fewspecial flute effects though not to any great extent. In the middle of the piece alyrical phrase from Ravel’sminiature Prelude for piano suddenly pops up andis then varied. It was a surprise to me to find that a high F sharp on which thesonatina ends seemed absolutely the right note on which to finish. Theatmosphere of the opening section seems to me to relate closely to a number ofrecent pieces inspired by rainforests.'
