Herbert Howell's Requiem written for unaccompanied SATB chorus and soli. Although written in 1936, Requiem was not released for performance until 1980, held back by Howells following the death of his son in 1935. It is a harmonious and deeply Romantic composition, but restrained and it is at these moments we realise how affected he was by his loss. It was the composer's intention that Requiem should be performed a cappella, however he provided a limited organ part, for rehearsal purposes only, which is included here. / Chant Et Piano

Vol.1 Premières Mélodies. Par FAURE GABRIEL. Gabriel FAURE est né à Pamiers (Ariège), le 12 mai 1845. Ses dons précoces pour la musique lui permirent d'entrer dès l'âge de neuf ans à la célèbre Ecole Niedermeyer fondée à Paris pour former les organistes et les maîtres de chapelle : durant une dizaine d'années, il y reçut un enseignement de grande qualité, axé principalement sur l'étude de la musique sacrée et des grands chefs-d'oeuvre classiques, auxquels l'initia notamment Camille Saint-Saëns, son professeur de piano. Dès sa sortie de l'Ecole, Fauré entama une brillante carrière d'organiste. En 1896, il succéda à Théodore Dubois à l'orgue de la Madeleine et fut nommé professeur de composition au Conservatoire : il y eut pour élèves Ravel, Koechlin, Enesco, Schmitt. Entre-temps, il avait rencontré Liszt à Weimar et s'était initié à l'art de Wagner dont il ne subit pas véritablement l'influence. Appelé en 1905 à la direction du Conservatoire de Paris, après la démission de Théodore Dubois, membre de l'Institut, critique musical, Fauré vécut ses dernières années dans l'isolement, frappé par une irréversible surdité qui le contraignit à démissionner du Conservatoire en 1920. Il est mort à Paris, le 4 novembre 1924. La musique de ce compositeur quelquefois incompris et qui toucha à presque tous les genres (hormis l'orgue), se révèle d'une grande subtilité. Ennemi de l'emphase, Fauré a mis un contrepoint élégant, une écriture harmonique très personnelle, des inflexions imprévues et le secret de sa sensibilité musicale peu commune au service d'une oeuvre variée et d'une extrême qualité./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11, 1727, Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was, according to all reports, one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received, and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem #2 ('The King Shall Rejoice'), although less well-known than Anthem #1, is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. This work contains an opening Allegro, brilliant and elegant rather than pompous - a grandiose setting of 'Glory and great worship hast thou laid upon him' - and a lively fugal Alleluia as a conclusion.
