Piano Trio no. 2 in c minor op. 66. After the great success of his first Piano Trio in d minor op. 49, some five years passed before Mendelssohn set to work on a new composition for this formation. But then the c-minor Trio came into being in a relatively short period in March/April 1845 and was published around a year later. Much more sombre in character than the sibling work, this second trio is also considered much more difficult in terms of technique (above all in the piano part). Thus, it has always stood somewhat in the shadow of the earlier trio. However, chamber music aficionados generally regard it as the more mature and challenging work in terms of compositional technique. The trio, taken from the volume Mendelssohn · Piano Trios HN 957, is now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.

C major-In Beethoven?s Triple Concerto a piano trio provides the soloists a first in the history of music. Beethoven?s treatment of the trio is pioneering: he does not apply a typical piano trio setting in contrast to the orchestra but varies his treatment of the solo parts allowing each instrument to play alone with the orchestra (particularly the cello) using two solo instruments together in ever new combinations and finally bringing together all three instruments with the orchestra. Beethoven weaves a complex web the orchestral piano violin and cello voices interplaying and entwining and he produces a true masterpiece.Bärenreiter?s new Urtext edition of Beethoven?sTriple Concerto is a completely fresh revision of this warm and beautiful showpiece. Albumblatt für Arriaga, commissioned by the Trio Arriaga and lasting some 7:30 minutes, is the composer's fourth contribution to the classical violin, cello and piano ensemble, for which he has a special esteem. The work was written in homage to the composer Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, and at the same time as a token of gratitude and admiration for the Trio Arriaga, to whose members the work is dedicated; a double motivation that is reflected in the title of the work. Its course is presided over by a markedly lyrical character that coexists with passages full of energy, rhythmic vivacity and drama. The introduction and epilogue of the work are based on a musical motif derived from the name of the Basque composer (Ju-A-n C-r-I-S-ostomo A-rr-I-A-G-A), made up of the notes A, C, E, Eb, A, E, E, A, G, A, in the manner of a musical acrostic, and from whose nature the harmonic and thematic material of the whole work is largely derived. After an early work and a discontinued attempt in 1831/32 Mendelssohn made his breakthrough in this important chamber music genre in the summer of 1839 with the Piano Trio in d minor op. 49 which was to be followedsix years later by the Trio in c minor op. 66. On publication of the first trio Schumann took the opportunity to describe the composer as the ?Mozart of the 19th century? whereby he was obviously alluding to the mixtureof Classical and Romantic stylistic elements. The musical text of these two famous Trios has been thoroughly revised to reflect the latest scholarly findings. In addition HN 1297 also includes a Flute part for thealternative version of op. 49 (Flute instead of Violin) that Mendelssohn himself made.
