Battles was written for the restoration of the epic 1927 silent film The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands and was commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) in 2013. The work presents eight contrasting scenes as a continuous sequence: War Introduction of Admiral von Spee German Banquet Building Steam/Preparing Islanders Call to Arms Great Battle at Sea and Victory. The original score was written for a small chamber orchestra symphonic brass and a substantial batterie of tuned and untuned percussion. Battles has been edited for symphonic wind orchestra with percussion and harp.Composer Simon Dobson says of hiscolourful score ?I wanted to keep things simple and clear so there is a British theme a fanfare march idea often heard on trumpet and a German naval theme which is a more angular motif.?

A Symphonic Sketch. Otto M. Schwarz composes not only for symphonic bands, but has written the soundtracks for many films. In this piece, he describes a ride on a roller coaster. At the beginning, the cars are pulled up by a chain. High above the ground the ride begins with all the well-known variations like steep downhill slides and loops, accompanied by the screams of the passengers. Towards the end of the piece, the ride becomes faster and faster, and then comes the end. Roller Coaster must be considered as a musical sketch, and is especially suited as an encore for your concerts. Get in! Let the ride begin!

Mark Jeanbourquin wrote Musicavenir (Music of the Future), on leaving the eponymous music school whose band he had conducted for some years. For every farewell there?s a new beginning, and this piece opens with ?Ausblick in die Zukunft? (Outlook on the Future) an explosive first section in ABA form. This is then followed by a calmer, lyrical passage before Musicavenir finally closes as the powerful opening theme is sounded again.
