Commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra this concertino was originally conceived as a part of a complete educational concertprogram. Four concertini each featuring a different instrumental family within the chamber orchestra are played in succession to demonstrate the characteristic sounds of those instruments. The music is thematically related but not identical to the Concertino for Chamber Orchestra (parts available on rental from the publisher) which serves as the program's closer demonstrating all of theorchestral sections playing together. This program is suggested by the composer for orchestra concerts however each instrumental concertino can beperformed individually and stands quite effectively on its own as a short chamber recital piece.

This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band a fanfare and brass band so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept.The name ConZEnSus comes from a combination of the words ‘Concert Cyclus’ (concert series) and ‘zes’ (Dutch for ‘six’). This leads to a new word which refers to ‘consensus’. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years) ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.

from Symphony No. 1 - The Lord of the Rings. Johan de Meij?s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. This transcription for brass band, arranged by the composer has the following movements: I. GANDALF (The Wizard), IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK (The Mines of Moria and The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm), V. HOBBITS. The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its première in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by the The Royal Band of the Belgian Guides under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, the symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded a grant by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Work for 2 Trumpets 2 Horns and 2 Trombones premiered in the Museum of Scotland in 1998 by members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Maxwell Davies has relished incorporating brilliant tuckets and alarms for brass in his larger-scale scores too much to write a perfunctory fanfare; a seminal influence was the statue of St. Michael on the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome where he studied in the late 1950s generator of high trumpet fanfares throughout his output which resurface in apocalyptic style towards the end of his orchestral work Roma Amor. Little Suite for Orchestra No. 1: Op 53-Malcolm Arnold is one Britain’s best-loved composers. In 1948 he composed a very short suite for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - entitled simply To Youth. Seven years later he took To Youth and made some fairly major revisions including a complete new movement and the Little Suite for Orchestra was born. The Little Suite for Orchestra follows a very similar pattern to the later suites for brass band starting with a bold strident Prelude which strangely ends quietly before a lovely lilting Dance composed in 3/8 time. Finally a rollicking and militaristic March brings the suite to a conclusion. This arrangement for brass band by Robin Norman is sure tobecome a classic in the brass band repertoire.

This timeless world-wide hit of the Flying Pickets has perhaps been arranged many times for all possible types of orchestra. However there are practically no arrangements for wind orchestras. Hans Vansant has arranged this jewel in an original way.

The Tuba Concerto was composed in 1953/4 after the London Symphony Orchestra invited Vaughan Williams to write a work for inclusion in the Orchestra’s fiftieth anniversary concert. The first performance was given by Philip Catelinet in the Royal Festival Hall London on 13th June 1954 with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli.The brass band arrangement is by Phillip Littlemore and is a welcome addition to the brass band repertoire.

Just Brass No. 28-The Just Brass series created with internationally-known Trumpeter Philip Jones is an important set of compositions and arrangements for brass ensemble ranging from Giant Just Brass for beginners through Just Brass Lollipopsand Junior Just Brass to Just Brass (mainstream) the level required of players of Greensleeves. This arrangement is scored for four Trumpets Horn four trombones and tuba.Elgar Howarth is internationally renowned as a conductorof Orchestral music and operas and was conductor of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble (now London Brass) and Musical Advisor of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band As a Trumpet player he has expended his talents on new works andarrangements for Brass Band.

The assignment to write a test piece for the National Brass Band Championships ended up also being a ?test piece? for myself as a composer. Although being quite familiar with the Brass Band phenomenon as a composer I still have the feeling ofbeing an outsider. Delta Energy turned out to be a non-program composition. The Brass Band as orchestra form is depicted musically in this piece. All the specific characteristics are portrayed in varying settings. Solo passages for Euphonium Flugelhorn and Cornet alternating with extensive tutti-passages and of course technical highlights form the ingredients for this work written in rhapsodic form. The title ?Delta Energy? is derived from a project of the N.V. NederlandseGasunie in Groningen which also contributed in making this composition possible.

The Fanfare For The Common Man came about in the summer of 1942 when Eugene Goosens approached eighteen American composers to contribute patriotic fanfares for performance by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Ten of these pieces were written for percussion and brass alone. The works do not only enrich the literature for brass and percussion but to pay tribute to all those involved in World War II.
