Compostela - Sur le chemin de St Jacques de Compostelle (The Way of St James) décrit la marche des pèlerins. Après une lente introduction, un thème brillant annonce qu?il faut prendre la route. L?arrivée en Espagne est indiquée par des chants incantatoires et des accords majestueux. A great many musical terms such as this are in Italian, because many of the important composers from the Renaissance to the Baroque were from the geographic area known today as Italy and spoke some form of Italian. Consequently, performance markings in their published music, widely disseminated through the rest of Europe, were in the language that they best understood. Music marked in this manner is to be played firmly and decisively with firm resolve and little variance from the marked tempo. Écrite dans un style cérémonial, cette ?uvre faisait partie d?un medley de marches pour les participants au Championnat 2019 des établissements d?études supérieures, qui s?est déroulé dans la préfecture de Kagoshima, au Japon. Elle a été créée par l?harmonie symphonique de Kagoshima Prefectural Shoyo High School sous la direction de sa directrice musicale, Junya Tateishi. Fantasy on the canon Freu' dich des Lebens-L?année 2008 marque le 400e anniversaire de la fondation de la ville de Québec (1608-2008) au Canada. Pour célébrer cet événement la Musique des Voltigeurs de Québec une unité d?infanterie de la force terrestre des Forces canadiennes a fait appel au compositeur Philip Sparke pour l?écriture de deux œuvres de concert (disponibles sur un compact disc édité spécialement pour cette occasion). Philip Sparke a composé Sounds of the Saint Lawrence (Échos du Saint-Laurent) une suite de chants traditionnels québécois et cette fantaisie libre sur le canon Freu? dich des Lebens de Ludwig van Beethoven. L?histoire de ce canon est absolument fascinante. En1822 Théodore Frédéric Molt un professeur auteur pianiste et organiste allemand - ancien soldat dans l'armée napoléonienne ayant combattu à Waterloo - arrive à Québec. En 1825 il retourne en Europe afin de parfaire sa formation. Au cours de son séjour il rend visite à Beethoven. Quelques jours plus tard il fait parvenir une lettre au compositeur sourd en incluant une feuille blanche sur laquelle il lui demande d'écrire « du fond de son grand cœur » un souvenir « qui restera pour moi à une distance qu'il me faudra presque 3000 heures pour parcourir un document éternellement précieux. »Beethoven accepte et le 16 décembre 1825 (jour de ses cinquante-cinq ans) il présente à Théodore Molt le canon Freu? dich des Lebens Le manuscrit est actuellement conservé dans une collection canadienne.Beethoven?s Greeting (?La signature de Beethoven?) débute avec une introduction lente basée sur le canon. S?ensuit un Vivo qui sera repris ultérieurement sous la forme d?un déchant à la mélodie du canon. Le thème du canon est chanté par le chœur à quatre voix (SATB) optionnel (AMP 243-050) mais la mélodie est également présente dans l?orchestration.

This major concert work cosists o five movements.1st movement: La Laguna del ShimbeSituated high up in the Andes mountains in Northern Peru are the Huaringas a group of lagoons in isolated and mysterious surroundings. The water has healing powersand for centuries traditional healers have settled there in small villages. From far the sick come to the Huaringas to be treated in nightly rituals in which the hallucinating juice of the San Pedro cactus gives the prophet a look inside hispatient. The biggest lagoon is the ?Laguna del Shimbe? one of the countless wells of the immense Amazon stream.2nd movement: Los AguarunasFurther downstream in Northern Peru we come across the rain tribe of Los Aguarunas. It?s a proud beautiful andindependent race which has never succumbed to domination not even from the Incas. They live from everything the forest has to offer: fish fruit plants ... . They also grow some crops and live as semi-nomads. They take their fate into their ownhands and after having made contact with modern civilisation they have integrated new elements into their lives without betraying their own ways.3rd movement: MekaronMekaron is an Indian word meaning ?picture? ?soul? ?essence?. The Indians are theorigina inhabitants of the Amazon region. They either live in one place as a group or move around a large region. They all have their own political system their own language and an intense social life. At the same time they are master of music andmedicine. ?Everywhere the white man goes he leaves a wilderness behind him? wrote the North American Indian leader Seatl in 1885. As a result of these contacts with the whites the disruption of most Indian societies began. (In this century alone 80 tribes have vanished completely).4th movement: KêêtuajêThis is the name of the initiating ceremony of the Krahô tribe in the Brazilian state of Goias in which young boys and girls enter adult life. They are cleansed with water painted with redpaint and covered with feathers after which the ritual dance holds the entire tribe spell-bound.5th movement: Paulino FaiakanIn 1988 the Indian chiefs Faiakan and Raoni Kaiapo came to Europe to protest against the building of the Altamira dam inBrazil. As a result of the dam the Indians would be driven from their traditional land and enormous artificial would be created. The project was supported financially by amongst others the European Community. In February 1989 the Indian tribesaround Altamira held a protest march for the first time in their history together. Amongst other things they paid tribute tot Chico Mendez who murdered in 1988 was the leader of the rubber syndicate and a fierce opponent of the destruction of theBrazilian rain forest. Brazilian and world opinion was awakened. The building of the dam was -albeit temporarily - stopped.

The unforgettable song Two Worlds was performed by Phil Collins inthe Disney movie Tarzan. The film has now been transformed into asell-out musical on Broadway, which is soon to be performed in theatresaround Europe. Why not add a little Disney magic to your concert withthis lively arrangement.

Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe where itinerant Jewish troubadours known as ‘klezmorim’ had performed at celebrations particularly weddings since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century lyrics had been added to klezmer music due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings) to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music particularly featuring the Violin and Clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used threecontrasting traditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

Although this familiar hit was recorded by the group Europe more than 20 years ago it remains a popular rock anthem even today. This solid arrangement for band is hard-hitting and true to the original.
