New Liszt Edition III Vol. 1. Par LISZT FRANZ. Composed in 1834, Liszt's Grand duo is based on material from three pieces from the first book (op. 19b) of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words (no. 1 in E major, no. 6 in G minor, and no. 3 in A major). While Liszt made an almost literal transcription of the first piece, he gave the second and third pieces a much freer arrangement, in the style of concert paraphrases. The large-scale concert piece was premiered by Liszt and Chopin on Christmas Day 1834 in a salon in Paris. The Grand duo was not published in Liszt's lifetime, and has survived as a draft. Schubert's Fantasy in C major (also known as the 'Wanderer' Fantasy) was a defining musical experience for the young Liszt. He arranged this masterpiece of Romantic piano literature for piano and orchestra in 1851, at the beginning of his Weimar period, and it was premiered by Julius Egghard in Vienna in December of that year. By 1855, Liszt had transcribed this arrangement for two pianos, because it was played on 22 October 1855 at a concert held in Weimar in honour of his birthday. With the version for piano and orchestra, Liszt attuned the fantasy to the requirements of the concert hall, reinforcing the orchestral effects inherent in Schubert's composition. His aim with the two-piano version was to achieve a similarly grand effect in spaces too small for an orchestra. The arrangement for piano and orchestra appeared in print in 1857, followed by the two-piano version in 1862. The Shepherd on the Rock D. 965 for Voice Clarinet and Piano-The Shepherd on the Rock composed in the final year of Schubert’s life was in a certain sense a commission. The opera singer Anna Milder-Hauptmann the first Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio had asked Schubert in letters written between 1824 and 1825 to write a grand scene for voice for her. Yet he only finally started work on it in autumn 1828. He used three different poems as the basis for his work combining them to form an equally brilliant and atmospheric musical scene.The Clarinet adds to its particular charm sometimes joining in as a soloist at other times following the voice like an echo - ensuringSchubert’s Shepherd a special place in the repertoire even today.

Edited from the sources by Jochen Reutter-Franz Schubert's scherzos were right at the beginning of a development that in the course of the 19th century resulted in the separation of the scherzo from the sonata and its emancipation as an independent Piano piece. These traces become apparent in the three pieces compiled in this volume: the two popular Scherzos in B flat major and D flat major (D 593) and the Scherzo in D major (D 570) which has survived together with an allegro fragment in the composer's autograph. With its pleasantly flowing melody its typically Schubertian harmony and the modest technical demands this piece might soon outrank its well-known sister work in B flat major.

I was in the middle of a recording project featuring Franz Schubert’s complete symphonies and other orchestral works, when I received a request from Anna Lucia Richter asking if I could compose a companion piece for Schubert’s The Shepherd on the Rock. I was inspired by the movingly simple yet profoundly mysterious musical text Schubert had published by Robert Schumann under the title Reliquien [Relics], and a composition in three sections was born which oscillates between recitative-like sections and expansive ariosos. The beginning of Schubert’s enigmatic funeral march Franz Schuberts Begräbnis- Feyer [Franz Schubert’s funeral ceremony] for nine winds, written when Schubert was only 16, wanders like a phantom as a tonal shadow through the score.
