One of Haydn's most attractive concertos from the mid seventeenth century the Concerto For Violin In C has only recently been re-discovered. In this charming concerto the soloist is accompanied by a String Orchestra a scoring which can be easily mastered by amateur ensembles. This Urtext edition is taken from the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn.

Cello part and Piano part A favourite with violinists for nearly 80 years The Fiddler's Nursery is now available for cellists as well. Wendy Max one of Britain's most highly respected specialist teachers of young players has edited the transposed solo part with bowings and fingerings to reflect contemporary approaches to early-stage learning for the instrument but leaving the music unaltered. No less suited to the cello than to the violin the results offer ideal material for individual or group tuition of players at pre-grade 1 and elementary level.

In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D'Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D'Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel's virtuoso classic 'Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated 'Tzigane? and both versions remain a 'must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D'Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel's masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer's earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition - one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of 'Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D'Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D'Aranyi. D'Aranyi's alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. Ysaÿe’s Cello Sonata unlike its companion piece for Violin solo has remained relatively unknown. All the same it merits special attention as it was written at the same time as the Violin Sonatas andhas the same superior qualities of musicianship. Our edition draws on a previously disregarded autograph manuscript from a private collection that provides interesting insights not found in the original print. To accompany thepublication of Ysaÿe’s violin sonatas which Henle has also issued in 2004 we are now offering the Cello Sonata in an urtext edition prepared by Christian Bellisario with detailed editorial comments. Par BOULEZ PIERRE. Pierre Boulez wrote two pieces for solo violin, called “Anthèmes” I and II. This is the first and shorter of the pair and was composed in 1991 for the Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition. Taking inspiration from childhood memories of Catholic church services, Boulez created a piece of two distinct sonic worlds, in seven short parts, ending with a “col legno battuto”, characteristic of Boulez’s witty humour. This arrangement is a direct transposition for cello of the original violin piece. It is not known who produced it but it is known that Boulez heard this version and approved of it./ Répertoire / Violoncelle

Cello and piano reduction of Walton's Cello Concerto based on the edition published in the Walton Edition Violin and Cello Concertos volume. Dating from 1956 the work was commissioned by Gregor Piatigorsky and premiered by him the following year. Walton regarded this work as the best of his three solo concertos. The Secret Of Technique In Cello Playing.Daily practice for soloists and advanced players by Albert Sammons. Op20. Transcribed by Lionel Handy. 'I was introduced to Albert Sammons' classic work The Secret of Technique in Violin Playing by Hugh Bean. I was fortunate to play chamber music with Bean for many years and he maintained that his ability to keep his technical level was largely due to Sammons teaching in general and this book in particular. Bean was a pupil of Sammons for more than twenty years and believed that this concise work was ofgreat benefit to students and also professional players with limited practice time. I am very grateful to Mr Richard King Sammons grandson and Mrs Mary Bean for allowing me not only to transcribe this work for Cello but also to include where appropriate the suggestions Sammons made in his original text and the additional notes that Bean added in the 2002 edition. I have tried to stay as close as possible to Sammons material but some adaptation has obviously been necessary. I hope that my own comments for cellists will clarify the changes that have been made and are offered as Hugh Bean said in his 2002 edition in the spirit of wishing to help both aspiring and established string players utilize to the full their practice time. Although this transcription contains several exercises not found in the classic Cello studies of Popper Duport and Grutzmacher et al I hope that the unorthodox nature of these exercises will broaden and free the imagination of cellists by providing a more extended approach to Cello technique.' - Lionel Handy

Boccherini's style spread throughout Europe and his Cello Concerto in D G.479 became the model for W.A. Mozart's Violin Concerto in D K.218 (1775).Boccherini's Concerto In D For Cello And String Orchestra is a beautiful piece and this is an arrangement for Cello with Piano Reduction. The solo cello part is also included on a separate insert.
