Lennox Berkeley's I Carry Your Heart With Me for medium Voice and Piano.'Sometime in 1970 I gave Lennox Berkeley a volume of poems by the American poet E. E. Cummings (1894-1962) since mysister Meriel Dickinson and I were commissioning him towrite a song-cycle for a whole programme of settings of Cummings. At the time he became involved with Chinese poetry and we were delighted with the Chinese Songs Op. 78.However a year or so later in July 1972 Berkeley did set a poem by Cummings. This was ‘i carry your heart with me’ from 95 Poems (1958) and he dedicated the song to the countertenorTay Cheng Jim.The manuscript leavesfew questions. Obviously the pedal sustains the sextuplet and triplet groups at the start and finish. It is possible that all the As in bar 32 of the left hand piano part should be flat although there are clashes like thiselsewhere. A few phrase-marks have been added on existing patterns.' - Peter Dickinson

Volume 2 - Songs 1918-1919-This society edition contains fifteen songs chronologically arranged and each with a detailed preface giving the relevant historical background to the composition. Warlock was very pedantic about original keys. He deplored transpositions but bowed to their necessity in performing editions. In this edition keys have been chosen to suit the medium voice. This generally means a range of about an octave and a fifth with nothing below B flat and nothing above F sharp/G flat.

A student of Gabriel Faur̩ and Louis Verne at the Paris Conservatoire Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) owes her aura to an exceptional teaching career spanning nearly 75 years during which she trained the most illustrious musicians from Copland to Glass not to forget Bernstein or Gardiner. In the past few years her creative work long considered negligible has finally been escaping from oblivion thanks to the untiring work of the Centre Nadia et Lili Boulanger directed by Alexandra Laederich. It is at her instigation that the publication of Nadia Boulanger's songs has continued in chronological order: after a first collection (HA 9725)devoted to the youthful works brought out during her lifetime by the publisher Hamelle the second volume presented here exclusively features unpublished works.
