British composer Michael Nyman ‘discovered’ this work when he played Leporello’s catalogue aria from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni on the Piano in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis. He has written that that musical discovery ‘dictatedthe dynamic articulation and texture of everything I’ve subsequently done’. The work is based on the first sixteen bars of the Catalogue Aria with thrusting rhythmic propulsion and repeated double stops for all instrumentsproduced within a short thrilling time frame.

Grieg Holberg Suite (From Holberg\'s Time) Op.40 (Full Score) Suite in the Olden Style for String Orchestra To celebrate the 200th birthday of the playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), a statue was erected in his honour in 1884. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a ?powdered wig piece? (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg?s era ? a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian ?air? and an impetuous ?rigaudon?. Later Grieg arranged his ?Suite in the Olden Style? for string orchestra. This version became one of his most popular compositions. Borrowing Mussorgsky's 'Promenade' from Pictures at an Exhibition the piece has twowalkers (violas) who take the listener with them onto the Via Della Fortuna then lead them from house to house. Several amber objects were found within the houses linking Pompeii with Lithuania. The lastmovement returns to the House of the Ancient Hunt then heads northwards along the Gintaro Kelias. The jubilant closing music refers to an earlier work (Geda's Weavings) based on Lithuanian folksongs.

After The Rain for String Orchestra draws on Max Ernst's disturbing painting Europe After the Rain which depicts the bleak remains of a landscape left after some inexplicable catastrophe.The work was commissioned by the City of London Sinfonia and first performed in the Queen Elizabeth Hall London 1992.
