King Arthur was the first of 28 scores Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) composed for radio between 1937 and 1947. It was an ambitious dramatisation of King Arthur’s life and times – part pageant part play part cantata – written by D.G. Bridson. This colourful suite incorporates the Introduction a dramatic Wild Dance some of the music underscoring the scenes for Galahad and The Holy Grail and two vivid battle scenes ending with The Final Battle and Apotheosis. King Arthur (scenes from a radio drama) for brass band should not be confused with a much longer orchestral suite which Paul Hindmarsh devised from the same source in1995. King Arthur (scenes from a radio drama) will be played by the 20 First Section finalists on 16th September 2018 at this year’s National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

Mary Poppins’ mixture of live action and animation together with the exceptional songs from Robert and Richard Sherman provides a thoroughly entertaining movie spectacle. Julie Andrews’s Oscar-winning performance as the title character is exceptional and Dick Van Dyke’s Bert the chimney sweep is equally stunning (despite that comical cockney accent). Andrew Duncan has put together a very enjoyable symphonic suite of music from the film including Chim chim cher-ee; Feed the Birds Let’s go Fly a Kite A Spoonful of Sugar Sister Suffragette and the inimitable Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section Duration: 5 minutes

La Renaissance est une période où s?est manifesté un intérêt renouvelé pour l?art classique fusionnant avec un point de vue plus moderne. Cette composition en quatre tableaux réunit quatre œuvres anonymes de la Renaissance. En exploitant les couleurs actuelles du Brass Band Franco Cesarini recrée l?atmosphère fascinante des fastes de la Renaissance. Le premier mouvement est une pavane intitulée Vive Henri IV (vers 1590). Lesecond mouvement plus rapide est basé sur la pièce Kemp?s Jig datée vers 1600. Le troisième tableau Canario (vers 1500) débute sereinement puis évolue vers un 6/8 pétillant. Le Bransle de chevaux (vers 1590) quatrième et dernier tableau offre une conclusion résolument spectaculaire.

Benjamin Britten composed his Occasional Overture Op.38 for the opening of the BBC Third Programme on 29th September 1946 when it was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. It was not heard again until 1982 when the composer’s Executors decided that it should be revived. Given the dominance of brass and woodwind in this concise but exciting work versions for brass band and wind band have been prepared for Britten’s centenary year. Brass Band Grade 6: Championship. D?ailleurs cette admiration si profonde fut riche de conséquences sur sa propre oeuvre. Dans Spiriti de Thomas Doss on sent planer l?esprit de Bruckner dont l?univers est évoqué par un fragment du choral de la Symphonie n° 5 qui apparaît en filigrane à la fin de l?oeuvre.L?introduction une sorte de marche funèbre expose les premiers fragments du choral de Bach. La musique éclate en segments que Thomas Doss combine et recombine pour construire un premier Allegro turbulentqui s?épanouit dans des tutti puissants. La trame devient exubérante et le divers fragments du choral de Bach finissent par tourbillonner les uns autour des autres dans un vol désordonné.Le passage central (religioso) est de nature méditative et introspective. Une structure en noires pleure une âme éplorée. S?appuyant sur des éléments minimalistes associés aux segments utilisés précédemment le troisième et dernier passage s?achemine vers l?exposition grandiose du choral de Bach. Dans le tourbillon de cloches on sent planer l?ombre des deux grands maîtres de l?orgue.

It is often thought that this melody came from the Victorian era when Irish songs were very popular however this Air was first published in 1813 and has been adapted and arranged by many composers and arrangers over the years. This arrangement as a Flugel Horn solo by Gary Westwood is a new treatment and shows off this tender and wistful love song.

Sparkling Overture, this energetic and dynamic piece opens with a festive and resolutely positive fanfare. The much more tranquil and lilting second theme is a magnificent chorale which is then followed by a brilliant return of the first motif. Used as a theme tune, this piece will be ideal as a contrasting, joyful and sparkling concert opening.

Little Hymn was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an alternative to the traditional hymn tune settings that provide one of the foundations of the brass band repertoire. This simple haunting melody begins on a brass quartet without cornets. The full band joins for the second part which rises to a richly textured climax before receding to a quiet reflective close.
