Easy To Intermediate Arrangements. The present booklet contains a sheet music collection of pieces from the chorale literature of the Renaissance and the Romantic period and is intended for group instruction. Concerted vocal music is particularly well suited for the flute ensemble, since when playing the flute the melodic quality is - similar to singing - essentially based upon breathing. This enables the flutist to maintain a natural flow during his performance. Since there is very little original literature for the flute ensemble, a pedagogue is often required to draw on arrangements in which the lowest voices are frequently comprised of non-flute accompanying motifs. In chorale music, all voices are equally employed in a voice-leading manner. The phrasing slurs depend upon the text. The breathing signs in some cases only serve to clarify the musical line in general and are not to be used for strong breathing. The arrangements are created for flute ensembles with four voices. In each case the lowest voice can also be performed with an alto flute as an alternative. An according part is attached to the edition. To set the scene, the aria comes after Jesus has been presented to the multitudes in a fast a furious, rowdy double orchestra and choir exclamation, and is condemned to death by crucifixion. Out of this outcry, the solitary flautist and soprano singer reflect on the question of sin, judgement and punishment. In thismost hauntingly vulnerable aria, Bach manages to find both beauty and fragility to reflect upon this question. Using the parts provided, this arrangement can be performed as either a quartet with 3 C Flutes and Alto Flute, or as a quartet with 3 Alto Flutes and Bass Flute. For the latter, the Alto Flutes are to play the original C Flute parts, and the Bass Flute plays the supplemental part provided. Each Flute part is quite difficult on this quartet and would be for advanced-intermediate / advanced flautists. This piece features four sections each one expressing a different mood: Flûtes Pastorales is quite calm with some enthusiastic highlights Flûtes Joyeuses reflects a very joyful part with a small dance in the middle Flûtes rêveuses sounds timeless and reminiscent of a theme of Castérède’s 'Twelve Studies' and Flûtes Légères has a fast and lightmelody. Jacques Castérède (1926-2014) is a renowned composer and pianist. He has won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1953 and has composed numerous melodic pieces including ballets concertos symphonies ensemble and chamber music.
